Stags, mouflons, coyotes and pronghorn antelope happily share Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. It was created in 1936 and is now one of the most reputed sanctuaries to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Right next-door is Steens mountain (2956m/9698ft), whose summit can be reached by taking the Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway. From there, you can observe the gorges dug by the glaciers and the Alword desert, 1829m/6000ft lower down.
