Baxter State Park, a vast rectangle of nearly 810,00ha/209,644 acres, provides a glimpse of the North Woods, one of the last true wildernesses on the American East Coast. Inside, you will find forests as far as the eye can see, numerous hiking trails (especially in the south), together with deer, elks and bears. Furthermore, the park houses one of the region's jewels: Mount Katahdin, a gigantic granite monolith that is the highest peak in the State of Maine.
